Background of the Study
Witchcraft accusations have long been a contentious issue in many Nigerian communities, particularly in Ugep Local Government Area, Cross River State. Such accusations often result in significant psychological trauma for the accused, leading to stigmatization, social exclusion, and mental distress (Ekong, 2023). Cultural beliefs surrounding witchcraft intertwine with local traditions, exacerbating the vulnerability of victims (Mba, 2024). Recent studies indicate that individuals facing witchcraft accusations experience anxiety, depression, and a diminished sense of self-worth (Ibe, 2025). This study examines the psychological effects of these accusations on victims, exploring the interplay between traditional beliefs and modern psychological responses. By integrating qualitative and quantitative methodologies, the research aims to reveal how witchcraft accusations impact mental health, social relationships, and community dynamics, while proposing culturally sensitive interventions (Obi, 2023).

Statement of the Problem
Witchcraft accusations in Ugep have resulted in widespread psychological harm to victims, yet there is a dearth of empirical studies on their mental health implications (Anyanwu, 2024). Victims often face social isolation, anxiety, and depression, compounded by community stigma. The absence of structured mental health support further exacerbates their condition. This study seeks to fill this gap by systematically investigating the psychological effects of witchcraft accusations and identifying factors that intensify or mitigate these adverse outcomes (Udo, 2025).

Objectives of the Study:

  1. To evaluate the psychological effects of witchcraft accusations on victims.

  2. To identify factors contributing to mental distress among the accused.

  3. To recommend culturally appropriate mental health interventions.

Research Questions:

  1. What are the primary psychological effects experienced by victims of witchcraft accusations?

  2. How do cultural beliefs influence these psychological outcomes?

  3. What interventions can alleviate the mental distress associated with such accusations?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. Witchcraft accusations are associated with significant psychological distress.

  2. Cultural stigma intensifies the mental health impacts on victims.

  3. Culturally tailored interventions can reduce the adverse psychological effects.

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it provides crucial insights into the psychological impact of witchcraft accusations, informing both mental health practitioners and community leaders. The findings will guide the development of culturally sensitive interventions aimed at alleviating the distress of affected individuals and fostering community acceptance (Okon, 2023).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
The study is limited to assessing the psychological effects of witchcraft accusations on victims in Ugep Local Government Area, Cross River State, excluding other forms of social stigma.

Definitions of Terms:

  • Witchcraft Accusations: Claims that an individual practices harmful magic.

  • Psychological Effects: Mental and emotional consequences resulting from experiences.

  • Stigmatization: The process of labeling and discriminating against individuals.
